Explore the horticultural history of the H. H. Hunnewell Estate on a 90-minute guided walking tour. Dating back to the 18th century, this remarkable estate has long been home to extraordinary botanical collections and a rich legacy of horticultural innovation. Deeply connected to the hybridization of hardy rhododendrons, landscape architecture, and an extensive conifer collection, the estate offers a fascinating look into a significant chapter of American horticultural history.
This tour is designed to provide an educational introduction to the estate’s landscape, history, and distinctive plant collections, along with some of the memorable stories and details that make the property so special. Highlights include the original Italian Garden, inspired by the great gardens of Lake Como; the first topiary garden in the United States; and the Pinetum, a nine-acre collection established in 1866 featuring more than 400 conifers from around the world.
Please note that this is a fully outdoor walking tour. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather and for walking through shady areas, dewy grass, slopes. Tour guests receive complimentary admission to the Garden at Elm Bank following the conclusion of the tour—you're welcome to explore the gardens at your leisure.
