Temple and Asian Garden

Asian and Temple Garden

This garden was part of the Olmsted firm's original 1907 design. A handful of trees in this area are original to the design, along with the slate pavers you may see circling the pond. Of particular interest is the Katsura tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum), which, evidenced by its size, has been growing for over a century in this garden. The platform temple was utilized by the Cheney-Baltzells for everything from hosting their garden party guests to enjoying their breakfast.

The Olmsted Asian Garden Restoration and Repurposing began in Spring 2022. MHS is currently completing Phase 1, as we work toward permitting for Phase 2. Volunteers and supporters are essential at every stage of this project, and we hope you get involved in the restoration and repurposing of this historic garden.
