Needham's Bill Meagher donates Snow Village to Festival of Trees

Santa climbs a ladder, colored lights thrown over his shoulder, towards the top of a Christmas tree that needs trimming. Skiers traverse the slopes of a mountain that towers over a city of ice skaters, carolers, and holiday festivities of all types.

This is one part of the miniature world Bill Meagher has cobbled together over nearly two decades collecting snow village pieces.

Fenway Park is on the other side of town, next to what’s supposed to be Christmastime on Beacon Hill.

Meagher, a Needham resident, donated his entire collection – except a few houses kept for a small home window display – to the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, to be used this year and in the future during its annual holiday festivities.

“We had a group of preschool children today,” he said. “Just to see their eyes light up, the excitement, really gives me a lot of joy.”

The hobby started about 20 years ago, in a random store, with the purchase of some interesting pieces.
