Pleaching, Pollarding, Coppicing and Practices of Pruning
Thursday 13 April 2017, 10:00am - 04:00pm

Where: The Gardens at Elm Bank - Putnam Building

Warren Leach, Landscape Horticulturist and owner of Tranquil Lake Nursery in Rehoboth, MA, will show how a diversity of pruning and training techniques can be used to create impressive structure in the garden. Pruning at different times of the year is key to promoting flowering as well as promoting a particular plant structure. Strong pruning and cutting back can be used not only to control the size of a plant but to enhance its ornamental beauty, promoting vigorous growth and oversized leaves. Warren will highlight a diversity of trees and shrubs that respond dramatically to this quirky pruning. The class will start with a PowerPoint presentation and then move out to the for hands-on demonstration and workday planned to rehabilitate the beech hedge and woody plants in the restored Olmsted Firm Italianate garden.

Bring a bagged lunch and we will picnic together mid-day.
