FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 15, 2012 - Massachusetts Horticultural Society will hold its 15th Anniversary Celebration at Elm Bank on Sunday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Free admission.
To mark the anniversary, activities have been planned for adults and children to enjoy.
The Wellesley Society of Artists will have an art show and sale in the Hunnewell Building from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Many of the artists have painted at the Gardens at Elm Bank during the summer, using Elm Bank themes as their subjects. Garden tours will be available at noon, 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. so community members may enjoy the 12 beautiful gardens on the property. Exhibits in the Maple Grove from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. include Follow the Honey — Honey Tasting and Live Bee Exhibit, Linx Camps, Wellesley Farmers’ Market and an historic exhibit of the Elm Bank Estate.
A celebration would not be complete without cake and ice cream, which will be served at 1 p.m. Local and state officials will join us for the festivities. Kiss Food Concession will be on location so people can buy lunch and enjoy a picnic in the Maple Grove. If your kids are playing soccer, come on over and join us.
Fun, especially for kids, includes Kids Mural Activity in the Gardens and Elm Bank Scavenger Hunt, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; build a Fairy Garden in Weezie’s Children’s Garden, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; and Linx Discover Camp games and nature arts from 10 a.m. until noon.
Free lectures will be offered, beginning at 11 a.m., on extending your growing season, and then at 2 p.m. on the history of Elm Bank.
For adults with a flair for gardening or floral design, join Marisa McCoy to create a fall basket centerpiece, 10 a.m.-noon, or join Art Scarpa, from 2-4 p.m., to make a succulent container (registration and fee, all materials included; visit www.masshort.org).
Wrap up the evening by joining Mass Hort and First Republic Bank, our sponsors, for light appetizers and “Champagne and Strings” in the Italianate Garden, from 4-6 p.m. Enjoy the music provided by the Fensgate Chamber Players (registration and fee; please visit www.masshort.org).
The anniversary celebrates Mass Hort’s home and the stewardship of the Cheney Estate-Elm Bank. In the summer of 1998, Mass Hort employees ventured out from their headquarters in Horticultural Hall at 300 Massachusetts Ave. in Boston to reclaim the beautiful Cheney-Baltzell estate, which had been nearly abandoned for about 25 years. Armed with historical photographs and creative ideas, professional landscape designers and dedicated volunteers turned the first soil to set change in motion.
Massachusetts Horticultural Society leases the 36-acre Cheney Estate in Wellesley/Dover from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Conservation and Recreation. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Founded in 1829, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society is dedicated to encouraging the science and practice of horticulture and to developing the public’s enjoyment, appreciation, and understanding of plants and the environment.
