WEEDS by Randal Prostak
Sunday, January 20 2013, 1:30pm - 2:30pm

Randy ProstakRandall Prostak, a scientist at the UMass Extension Landscape and Agriculture Service, is a specialist on weeds - their history and their consequences in both our gardens and our landscapes. Of over 2200 documented species of plants that exist "in the wild" in Massachusetts, about a third are "naturalized" non-native species that arrived here by various means. While only 84 of these are currently considered harmful invaders, those few represent a dire threat to local species and therefore local ecosystems. For the past decade he has been working with the Mass Invasive Plant Advisory Group to organize an effective defense and to mount a counterattack. Randall is the coauthor of Pest Identification Guide for Weeds and Insects and Diseases of Woody Ornamentals. Join with members of the American Rhododendron Society to hear the latest about dangerous weeds.

This event is free and open to the public.

Location: The Putnam Building, Gardens at Elm Bank
