Go Green - Plant Herbs!
NEU/HSA 31st Annual Great Herb & Heirloom Plant Sale
Saturday, May 07 2011, 9:00 am - 1:00pm
Come rain or shine, each year since 1980, The New England Unit of the Herb Society has held its famed 'Annual Herb & Heirloom Plant Sale' - the Saturday before Mother's Day. The Herb Sale is the Unit's primary fundraiser and monies raised support the Teaching Herb Garden at Elm Bank and many other 'green' educational outreach projects.
This year's Plant Sale Chair, Lynn Hartman, is a gifted nursery woman who has a special talent for growing cutting edge plants and a zeal for sharing her love of gardening.
As I go through the list, I can easily see the special additions I will choose for my backyard. Yes, we'll have parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. Yet, imagine heirloom tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, eggplants, and an unparalleled selection of basils, mints and much, much more…. Over 3000 plants will be on sale. There will be custom planted culinary and succulent containers for Mother's Day gifts, fairy garden environments, and free chives and Johnny Jump Ups for the kids!
The Herb of the Year for 2011 is horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) and we will have a brand new cookbook available with wonderful horseradish recipes as well as a myriad of horseradish for your very own garden.
Our multitude of locally grown, Members' Plants chaired by Beryl Feldman, offer the buyer lovingly cultivated choices that are sure to thrive in our unpredictable New England climate. Knowledgeable and helpful Herb Society Members will assist you in finding what you are looking for~ as well as information on how and where to plant these delights. We offer 'Personal Shoppers' who can help you put together your own herb containers, hanging plants, kids patches, and even a plan for a small herb garden! If you bring along your Herb Sale 'Reminder' postcard, and present it at checkout, you will be eligible for a special gift drawing.
