Adult Education

Providing horticulture education for adults is a large part of the mission for the Massachusetts Horticulture Society. We offer an array of workshops, courses and lectures throughout the year that cover a wide variety of topics and interests. Below is the list of upcoming classes in chronological order.

Massachusetts Master Gardener training program

Mass Hort hosts the Massachusetts Master Gardener training program. To learn more about this program, please see the Master Gardener section.

Thursdays at the Hort

Join us on Thursday evenings at Elm Bank for a lecture series that offers something for everyone. Every Thursday evening in 2012, with few exceptions, a wide variety of experts will offer a presentation sure to please the armchair gardener as well as the master gardener.

Presentations will begin at 7pm and go until all questions are answered. A sample of our program offerings are listed below. The classes are priced at $12 for members and $15 for non-members unless otherwise indicated. There is no need to pre-register and you may pay at the class.

Composting

June 21, 2012  - Ann McGovern - Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection

You can improve your soil while getting rid of nearly half of your household garbage by composting. Compost is the basis for healthy soil. Healthy soil grows healthy lawns and gardens without the need for pesticides or chemical fertilizers. You can have a beautiful yard without using chemicals that can harm children, pets and the environment. Learn how to turn coffee grounds, tea bags, fruit and vegetable scraps, egg shells, yard waste and even paper towels into black gold that will transform your soil into rich, fertile earth. This workshop covers easy composting methods, different types of bins, indoor worm composting for apartment-dwellers, and how compost can eliminate the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides in your yard and garden.
