Natural Plant Dyes E-mail

Vivid reds, bright yellows, rich purples, deep blues, and mossy greens--an amazing array of colors can be extracted from plants. Learn about the ancient art of natural dyeing, using plants and a few simple ingredients to dye fibers and fabrics like wool, silk, and cotton. You'll be introduced to the basics of natural dyeing through a demonstration, and learn about the wide range of plants that produce color, and which can be grown in your own garden. Students will go home with several dyed samples produced in class.

Iris Weaver is an herbalist and professional gardener who has been working with plants for 35 years. She is self-taught and believes that everyone can learn from and enjoy plants. She gardens, consults, and teaches classes in the greater Boston area.

Ecological Landscaping in a Coastal Environment E-mail

Here’s a chance to combine your love of gardening with a summer trip to the beach! Join noted landscape designer Kevin Doyle and a coastal ecologist for a guided walk along the shore at low-tide to look at native shore plants in their natural habitat. Then you’ll tour Kevin’s own remarkable Kingston seaside garden, gaining an understanding of the practical and ecological considerations of gardening close to the ocean’s edge.
