Horticultural Experts and Community Volunteers begin planting on the
Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway
Wellesley, MA May 5, 2008 – The Massachusetts Horticultural Society is proud to announce that planting has begun on its designated parcels on the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway. The 22-week long project will involve planting 8,000 trees, shrubs, and plants in accordance with the Halvorson Landscape Partners’ design on Parcels 19, 21 and 22. These parcels comprise about 5 acres outside of South Station in downtown Boston.
Work began on April 25th with an extensive effort to complete the planting beds and install many of the larger trees and shrubs. A group of landscape professionals and nurseries generously donated time, plants, and materials to the MHS Greenway Gardens. While this is a work-in-progress, in just a matter of hours these experts had completely transformed these parcels.
Volunteers from Boston and the surrounding communities continued the planting efforts on Sunday, May 4th with one special guest. World-famous British nurseryman Adrian Bloom joined in the efforts on the first day of volunteer planting. As an added bonus for the volunteers, Bloom, who designed the Bressingham Garden at Elm Bank last year, conducted an impromptu pruning workshop at the Gardens after they had finished planting.
While work has started on the Greenway, there is still much to be done. A significant portion of the remaining work on the Gardens will be done by volunteers. Volunteer activities include planting, cleaning, raking, mulching, plant labeling, and watering. Much of the remaining planting and upkeep will be done by community volunteers eager to leave their mark on Boston’s newest green space.
